The only surviving Hardy organ in Australia

From Hardy and Sons' of Stockport, England in 1892 for £400, including freight, to Geelong

A complete history
All Saints’ church was just over 25 years old when a decision was made by the Parish Vestry to purchase a pipe organ from Hardy and Sons of Stockport, England. Parish records show an amount of just over £400 for the purchase, which included shipping to Melbourne and then movement, by rail, to Geelong.  Today, the organ at All Saints, Newtown is probably the only surviving example of a Hardy organ in Australia. The original organ has been modified and enlarged significantly since 1892 but much of the core pipe work and internal wooden structure remains. The following series of events sum-up the organ’s history:

1871 -          A small pipe organ was purchased (installed by Jesse Biggs, pipework by J.C. Bishop - obtained from George Town,  Tasmania).  Single manual and pedal board (8.8.8.4.2.8. Per 16)
1891 -          Parish begins a fund to purchase a pipe organ to replace the 1871 organ, which was removed from the church
1892 -          A two manual organ and pedal board was ordered from Hardy and Sons, Stockport, England
1892 -          Organ arrives in Geelong and installed at the South East corner of the Nave

September 15th, 1892    Dedication of the organ by Bishop Field Flowers Goe, Bishop of Melbourne

1928 -          South transept built and the wind supply transferred to an electric blower rather than the original hand pump.
1953 -          The heavy tracker action of the organ converted to electro-pneumatic. The organ console moved to a new position
1968 -          Cleaning and repair
1982 -          Complete restoration with provision made for future expansion and control circuitry converted to a solid state system.
1992 -          Centenary celebration. A major expansion of the resources of the organ as a result of parish fundraising.

2017 -          125th anniversary of the organ. A new mobile console and pedal board installed together with the addition of a                              Choir division and additional pipes. The Tromba rank was sourced from Maughan Uniting Church, Adelaide, and the bottom octave of the Violone from the main Dallas Brooks Hall organ. The organ now has approximately 2000 pipes. As part of the enhancement the organ was cleaned and the electrical system upgraded to incorporate digital technology (including a Peterson ICS-4000 pipe organ control system) by Australian Pipe Organs (APO). This upgrade was entirely funded as a gift from a parish family.
